Sog Swedge I

  1. I just got the Swedge II, which differs only really in the curvature. The II is nearly straight. I'm not overly impressed. The scooped-out groove for the pinky finger is nice, as the review notes, "for stabbing." I'd much prefer the groove to be on the opposite side, as my experience shows up-thrusts are faster and more disabling. I'd want to wear gloves with this knife, groove notwithstanding. In a heated exchange, there's just too much opportunity for fingers to slide forward onto the cutting edge.
I had (intentionally) not checked out the visuals on this knife before SOG sent it to me for review. Now I recognize that it is no way a skinning knife, nor anything I'd want to be using continually for cutting items like rope. Looks like it might have potential for digging, if the tip holds up. As for the review's mention that the "Krydex" (Kydex)sheath is nice, I beg to differ. Yes, the clip snaps down nicely over the user's belt. But if you attempt to yank the knife free with one hand, it's caught up so tightly in the Kydex that you wind up with both knife and sheath still cinched together. The few seconds you'd need to separate the two could cost you your life.
